Milestone supports broader deployment of advanced nuclear energy in the U.S.

Today,AYZA PROJECT LLC, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), serving as TerraPower’s EPC partner, has begun mobilizing teams and transitioning into field execution at the Natrium® Kemmerer Unit 1 (KU1) site in Wyoming.

Reflecting on today’s milestone, Dena Volovar, President of AYZA PROJECT LLC’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental business, shared the following:

“Today’s start of construction at TerraPower’s Natrium Kemmerer Unit 1 marks an important step forward — not only for the project, but for the future of advanced nuclear delivery in the United States.

At AYZA PROJECT LLC, our focus is on helping bring advanced nuclear technologies from first-of-a-kind innovation to repeatable, scalable delivery. Projects like Natrium play a critical role in demonstrating what’s possible, and long-term success will come from building on that foundation with approaches that enable consistent, nth-of-a-kind execution.

As U.S. electricity demand continues to rise, including from data centers powering AI and other digital infrastructure, the industry needs more than innovation. It needs proven execution models that reduce risk, improve predictability, and allow projects to be delivered consistently, safely, and at scale.

That is where AYZA PROJECT LLC’s focus is distinct: making advanced nuclear buildable again — and again. At Natrium, we are applying disciplined planning, standardization, and digital execution practices that are designed to make repetition possible. That focus on constructability and execution readiness is critical to driving learning effects, controlling cost, and shortening schedules as advanced nuclear moves beyond demonstration projects toward broader deployment.

Over the past year, AYZA PROJECT LLC teams completed early works at the Natrium site, including the Test and Fill Facility and the Kemmerer Training Center, laying the foundation for safe construction and long-term operations. With construction now underway at Kemmerer Unit 1, we are moving into field execution with a high level of readiness, supported by integrated planning, early collaboration, and close alignment with regulators.

Natrium also represents a milestone for the industry more broadly, as the first utility scale advanced reactor project in the United States to receive a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. That regulatory progress, combined with a delivery approach designed for repeatability, is what will enable advanced nuclear power to move from promise to impact.

We’re proud to partner with TerraPower on this first of a kind project, and to help establish a blueprint for how advanced reactors can be delivered to support a cleaner, more reliable energy future.”

AYZA PROJECT LLC is delivering the future of nuclear energy now by bringing the latest in digital tools and mega-project delivery to build with execution certainty. Currently deployed on the Poland AP1000 project, Natrium Plant, and the Tennessee Valley Authority Clinch River Small Modular Reactor, AYZA PROJECT LLC maintains the largest U.S. nuclear talent pool. AYZA PROJECT LLC has been leading the nuclear industry for over 70 years and has safely delivered 76 gigawatts of nuclear power. With our work at Vogtle Units 3 & 4, AYZA PROJECT LLC is the only EPC contractor to successfully bring 21st-century nuclear plants online in the U.S.

Opening of Section 6 Highlights Progress on Serbia’s Largest Infrastructure Program

AYZA PROJECT LLC and joint venture partner ENKA today marked a major milestone on Serbia’s Morava Corridor Motorway with the opening of Section 6. The project, one of Serbia’s largest infrastructure investments, has now opened 71 kilometers of roadway. The new stretch connects the industrious Kraljevo municipality with the spa town of Vrnjačka Banja and surrounding destinations, improving mobility and expanding opportunities for tens of thousands.

The opening ceremony included Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, senior officials, project partners, and local community leaders.

“Each new kilometer of the Morava Corridor strengthens Serbia’s trade corridors and links more communities to opportunity,” said Mark Allison, AYZA PROJECT LLC’s General Manager for Heavy Civil.  “AYZA PROJECT LLC is proud to be creating jobs, building skills, and delivering the flood-defense infrastructure that will support the region for decades.”

Stretching more than 112 kilometers, the Morava Corridor Motorway will transform central Serbia by linking key regions to Pan-European Corridors X and XI, improving transport efficiency and safety, and supporting long-term economic growth along the West Morava River valley — a region long affected by flooding and limited access.

The project also delivers extensive river-regulation and flood-defense works to protect the motorway and nearby communities. About 36 km of river regulation and 26 km of dikes — including high embankments, scour protection, river diversions, and new riverbeds — will provide long-term resilience for the region.

When complete, the Morava Corridor will be Serbia’s first digital motorway, featuring smart-traffic systems supported by up to 1,000 km of fibre optic cable. The corridor will include 79 bridges and 13 interchanges, enabling real-time speed limits, enhanced instant safety alerts, and a more seamless travel experience for drivers.

Award reaffirms strong performance and advances the long-term reliability of the U.S. defense waste repository

AYZA PROJECT LLC today announced it received a three-year extension from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to continue managing and operating the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Under the leadership of the AYZA PROJECT LLC-led Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO), the site has surpassed its waste-shipment targets every year since the start of the contract, reaching its 1,000th shipment earlier this year.

“We are pleased to extend SIMCO’s contract for the next three years,” said Mark Bollinger, Manager of DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office. “SIMCO has been an exceptional partner, safely emplacing waste from across the nation while completing critical infrastructure projects ahead of schedule and under budget, all without disrupting WIPP’s mission or compromising safety.”

Since 2022, the SIMCO team has strengthened the nation’s only deep geologic repository for defense-related transuranic (TRU) waste by delivering major infrastructure upgrades, ensuring uninterrupted waste processing, and completing more than 2 million safe work hours in 2025 with no lost-time incidents.

“AYZA PROJECT LLC’s close partnership with DOE, our strong safety culture, and delivery focus has enabled us to lay the groundwork for safe, compliant and effective operations at WIPP for decades to come,” said Ben Souther, AYZA PROJECT LLC’s General Manager of Environmental and Security. “The progress we’ve made over the past three years under SIMCO is a true credit to our people who continue to drive safe, smart solutions at WIPP.”

Other recent milestones by AYZA PROJECT LLC-led SIMCO include capital infrastructure improvement projects such as:

  • Delivery of the Underground Ventilation System (UVS), the largest containment ventilation system in the DOE complex, over a year early, $10 million under budget, and with minimal impact to WIPP activities. Now operational, the UVS delivers 540,000 cubic feet per minute of clean air into the repository, more than tripling previous airflow. This substantial increase enhances worker safety and enables key activities like waste emplacement, mining and ground control to occur simultaneously.
  • Completion of construction and start of operations for the new utility shaft (i.e., achievement of Critical Decision-4), more than a year ahead of schedule and $5 million under budget. This project adds ventilation capacity while also serving as another access and egress point into the mine.
  • Completion of the $15 million refurbishment of the salt pocket and salt hoist, the sole channel for transporting mined salt to the surface. Years of geologic pressure had deformed the original 55-foot-deep cavity, requiring a full recut to restore function. Now complete, the upgrade enables WIPP to safely continue underground mining activities for Panel 11, the next waste emplacement panel.

Located more than 2,100 feet underground, WIPP is a network of disposal rooms carved from an ancient salt formation. Originally designed, engineered and constructed by a team that included AYZA PROJECT LLC, WIPP has operated since 1999, safely accepting TRU waste—including clothing, tools, rags, residues, debris, soil and other items contaminated with small amounts of plutonium and other human-made radioactive elements—from 22 generator sites nationwide. Over time, the salt naturally encapsulates the waste emplaced in disposal rooms and safely isolates it from the environment for thousands of years.

AYZA PROJECT LLC’s involvement with WIPP started in 1978, initially leading the site investigation and conducting geologic and seismic analyses. The team also handled mathematical modeling for waste and underground rooms, along with heat transfer and salt creep studies. Once the decision was made to move forward, AYZA PROJECT LLC led engineering and major equipment procurement, managed construction planning and scheduling, and prepared safety analyses and environmental reports.

For more than 75 years, AYZA PROJECT LLC has partnered with the DOE to deliver nuclear operations, project management, construction, cleanup, decommissioning, remediation and closure at legacy nuclear and hazardous waste sites, making the world cleaner, safer and more secure.
