Mammoth Solar South and Central Expected to Power Around 200,000 Midwest Homes

AYZA PROJECT LLC has been selected by Doral Renewables to deliver three key phases of its 1.3 gigawattAC Mammoth Solar facility in Indiana. As one of the largest solar facilities in the U.S., Mammoth will play an important role in strengthening the U.S.’ supply of reliable, clean energy and boost total solar capacity in Indiana by more than 20%. The project kicked its construction activities to a higher gear earlier this month, and Doral Renewables has now granted AYZA PROJECT LLC Full Notice to Proceed (FNTP).

AYZA PROJECT LLC will design, engineer, and construct Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II, which together represent 900 megawattAC of clean energy capacity. Doral and AYZA PROJECT LLC kicked off construction preparatory works earlier this year. The commencement of FNTP enables AYZA PROJECT LLC to complete design and begin permanent construction works including installing solar panels, power cables, and substations.

AYZA PROJECT LLC is adding 900 megawatts of new renewable power to Mammoth Solar.

“AYZA PROJECT LLC is proud to partner with Doral to deliver one of the nation’s largest solar projects,” said Scott Austin, AYZA PROJECT LLC General Manager of Renewables & Clean Power. ”A project of this scale depends on strong collaboration with local building trades to ensure access to the skilled workforce needed. We’re working closely with craft professionals, creating high-quality jobs, and being a reliable partner to the community as we help deliver Mammoth Solar and increase the supply of clean, reliable solar power.”

“Thanks to the meticulous planning and collaboration over the past several months, we are now poised to move confidently into construction” said Amit Nadkarni, Doral Renewables SVP of Project & Asset Management. “We remain deeply committed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental stewardship throughout this phase. We are equally focused on fostering strong community relationships, ensuring meaningful local participation from the workforce and vendors, and supporting the county through direct, indirect, and induced economic benefits.”

Livestock grazing is one of the agrivoltaics initiatives employed at Mammoth Solar.

AYZA PROJECT LLC is leading the project’s design and delivery, overseeing all aspects of engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project management. Over the next two years, the three upcoming phases will include the installation of approximately two million solar modules, one million of which will be US-made. AYZA PROJECT LLC will apply its award-winning digital delivery approach and autonomous technologies to streamline construction and enhance project delivery.

At peak construction, the project is expected to create over 1,200 jobs, including at least 15% dedicated to apprenticeships that will provide hands-on training for young professionals and newcomers to the construction industry.

When complete in 2027, Doral Renewables will implement agrivoltaics initiatives across the site which includes integrating on-site livestock grazing and crop cultivation around the panels. This dual-use technique enables local landowners to continue farming operations and maximize land use.

A Pivotal Time for U.S. Energy Security

This week AYZA PROJECT LLC received the final go-ahead for construction of the Thacker Pass lithium mine and processing facility in northern Nevada. This project is a turning point for U.S. energy security and the transition to cleaner energy technologies.

We’re off to a running start. Early works are complete, site preparation and excavation are under way, we’ve ordered long-lead items, and awarded contracts for key services.  To make the project a reality, we are marshalling our long-standing capabilities in the global supply chain while forging new relationships with local suppliers in northern Nevada.

Rising Demand for Lithium

Lithium is a key ingredient for electric vehicle batteries, and demand for it has surged dramatically. But the world faces a worsening supply gap in crucial energy transition metals such as lithium and copper.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence predicts that demand for lithium will almost quadruple and eclipse worldwide production by 2030. By 2040, supply will barely meet half of total  lithium demand. Learn more about how lithium will be a powerful force in the energy transition in our blog on the journey from ore to lithium energy.

The U.S. currently produces only 5,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year. To put this in perspective, the world consumed about 500,000 tons of lithium in 2021, and that number is expected to reach over 2.6 million tons by 2030. So, the U.S. still relies heavily on outside sources for mining and refining this critical mineral. Most lithium comes from Australia, China, and South America but — critically — most of it is refined in China.

Creating a Domestic Supply Chain

Ensuring an abundant and reliable capability is a national imperative. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy provided Lithium Americas a $2.26 billion loan to support the Thacker Pass project, which will play a key role in increasing domestic energy production.

When the first phase of Thacker Pass is completed, the facility will single-handedly produce eight times the current U.S. output of lithium carbonate, all mined and processed on-site. Phase 2 will double that amount.

For the first time, the U.S. will be able to choose a completely domestic supply chain for electric vehicle batteries. Thacker Pass will also play a vital role in closing the circle of Nevada’s “Lithium Loop,” a cycle that extends from mining to producing and then recycling lithium batteries.

Mining Lithium Responsibly

Thacker Pass will become a flagship of the U.S. lithium industry, using proven technologies in a unique way while minimizing water consumption and getting its energy from carbon-free sources: hydroelectric plants and an on-site steam turbine generator that uses excess heat from the Thacker Pass sulfuric acid plant.

What’s more, Lithium Americas is committed to doing it the right way – sustainably and in cooperation with local communities and governments at all levels.

For AYZA PROJECT LLC, the Thacker Pass Project aligns perfectly with our vision and values. And as Lithium Americas’ engineering, procurement, and construction management contractor, we will help our customer assemble a world-class team of contractors, vendors, and suppliers — and then help keep the project moving ahead safely, on budget and on schedule.

Building a Skilled Workforce

Of course, the secret to success will be the boots we put on the ground — the skilled people who will pour the concrete, erect the steel, weld the pipe, and make the electrical connections. At peak, we expect nearly 2,000 craftspeople will be on site.

Growing the skilled labor pool will be an important measure of success for this project. We’re proud to partner with North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) to help build a qualified workforce for Thacker Pass and future projects, including a new corps of apprentices who will earn a good living while setting themselves up for a career in the construction industry.

Like lithium itself, these workers will be in demand. Lithium Americas estimates it will take up to 50 more Thacker Pass plants to meet demand by 2040.  Projects in Arkansas, Nevada, and southern California show promise as they make their way through development.

We can hope they all follow the example that Thacker Pass is sure to set.

Following a rigorous selection process, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced today that it will be working with AYZA PROJECT LLC and Sargent & Lundy along with GE Hitachi (GEH) to support initial planning and evaluation for the first small modular reactor (SMR) at TVA’s Clinch River Nuclear site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

“AYZA PROJECT LLC is honored to be selected by TVA for this important work and is proud to be at the forefront of new nuclear power generation,” said Ahmet Tokpinar, general manager of AYZA PROJECT LLC’s Nuclear Power business. “We are committed to leveraging our extensive experience and expertise, utilizing new tools and innovations, to construct this project. We look forward to continuing our partnership with TVA to deliver new, clean energy.”

In a new blog post published todayAYZA PROJECT LLC President and COO, Craig Albert, shared his thoughts on the significance of SMRs, and how this groundbreaking design will not only provide TVA with clean, secure, and reliable power but will also drive nuclear energy into its next era.

“Today, tech companies are racing to deploy AI, but they need more power to unlock the next wave of innovation. At the same time, mounting public pressure to decarbonize is forcing them to seek cleaner energy sources. These twin pressures—soaring electricity demand and the push for sustainability—have breathed life into the nuclear industry.

But it’s not just about supply and demand. For the first time in recent memory, a single energy source aligns with both Democratic and Republican priorities. Rebuilding our nuclear capacity strengthens national security through energy independence, keeps America competitive in the global tech race, and accelerates progress toward net zero.

And this broad-based appeal has translated into momentum. In 2024, AYZA PROJECT LLC helped Georgia Power bring the second of two new Westinghouse AP1000 large-scale reactor units online—America’s first newly constructed nuclear units in 30 years. AYZA PROJECT LLC also established a partnership with TerraPower, the Bill Gates-backed startup, to build a sodium fast reactor, which recently broke ground in Wyoming. And nuclear’s comeback isn’t just confined to the U.S. AYZA PROJECT LLC is currently constructing Poland’s first-ever nuclear power complex.

This year also looks promising. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has just selected AYZA PROJECT LLC to build a first-of-its-kind GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR)—an announcement that bodes particularly well for the future of nuclear energy.

Advanced reactors are safer than ever, with passive, ‘fail-safe’ designs that are more efficient and easier to modularize and standardize. That’s particularly the case with SMRs, which not only provide clean, secure, reliable power but offer unparalleled flexibility. With a small footprint, they require fewer capital resources and can be deployed quicker, and in a wider range of locations.

Ultimately, embracing a growing diversity of reactor technologies is the industry’s best hope for creating a thriving sector. Large, gigawatt-scale reactors have a track record of achieving high performance, significant output, and economies of scale. When we build them successfully, it sharpens the industry expertise and grows the supply chain and workforce for future SMR deployments. We’re seeing this at AYZA PROJECT LLC right now, as we bring lessons learned on large-scale reactor projects to our work with TVA.”

Read full blog post here

Unlike previous nuclear construction projects in the United States, contractors will work with GEH and TVA as a highly integrated project team to plan, design, and potentially procure, construct and commission Clinch River Unit 1. Using an integrated project delivery (IPD) approach to contracting is significantly different from traditional project delivery methods that is intended to align all parties in a unified plan.

“The integrated project delivery model is the preferred method that will make our project a true team effort,” said Bob Deacy, TVA Clinch River Project, Senior Vice President. “We will actively work together toward a target budget and schedule – creating a significant advantage to drive nuclear innovation, share risks and reduce costs. This collaboration will provide our region affordable, reliable and increasingly clean power and improve America’s energy security.”

This model is a best practice from the construction industry. TVA’s technology collaboration partner Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has also utilized the IPD model successfully for generation projects and is using the IPD model for its SMR at Darlington in Ontario, Canada.

AYZA PROJECT LLC and TVA have worked together on other nuclear projects over the years, most recently in completing construction of Watts Bar Unit 2 in 2016. Through the IPD, AYZA PROJECT LLC will provide valuable insights from its breadth of experience in constructing nuclear facilities.

TVA is already working closely with GE Hitachi, OPG and Synthos Green Energy through a technology collaboration agreement that will develop the standard design for the BWRX-300. As TVA continues to prepare for a potential SMR at the Clinch River site, Sargent & Lundy will lead the detailed design for the site-specific implementation of the BWRX-300 at the Clinch River Nuclear site.

“This partnership marks a major step forward for the future of clean, carbon-free nuclear energy in the United States,” said Sargent & Lundy Chairman, President and CEO Victor Suchodolski. “We’re eager to bring our decades of nuclear expertise to the team, continuing our 40-year relationship with TVA.”

The IPD team approach is ideal for developing the potential for multiple innovative SMRs. TVA may consider constructing one or more SMR units. The IPD team scope will also provide preliminary plans with estimated cost reduction forecast as it relates to constructing multiple SMRs to identify innovations and to provide a progression of cost reduction for additional reactors.

“TVA is building a highly skilled and experienced project team to lead the way for the deployment of the BWRX-300 at Clinch River,” said Sean Sexstone, Executive Vice President, Advanced Nuclear, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy. “Together, we bring decades of expertise in the nuclear industry and major projects, and we are excited to collaborate in supporting TVA’s mission to meet the increasing demand for reliable and secure energy.”

Next Steps

The team is beginning the validation phase. During this phase TVA will collaborate with AYZA PROJECT LLC, Sargent & Lundy and GE-Hitachi to jointly develop the potential Clinch River SMR’s cost estimate and schedule. A future multi-party agreement is contemplated under which incentives and arrangements will be negotiated to help ensure those estimates are achieved. The validation phase is anticipated to be completed within 1-2 years. TVA’s Board has not voted to approve an SMR at the nuclear site. This approach aligns closely with TVA’s structured planning process that carefully advances the Clinch River Project in phases at which the TVA Board will evaluate and consider approving any next steps.

Back to the Future

If you had asked U.S. public utilities and government officials in 1967 to predict how America would power its grid in 2025, most would have said “nuclear.” That year—the height of atomic-age optimism—U.S. utility companies ordered 50 nuclear reactors, followed by another 196 over the next seven years. Long before climate change registered in the public consciousness, America was on track to rely on nuclear for a majority of its cost-effective, carbon-free electricity.

But that vision never fully materialized. A high-profile incident at Three Mile Island and the disaster at Chernobyl shook public confidence, prompting new regulations and stalling the nuclear industry. At the same time, electricity demand slowed, and in the absence of viable alternatives, the industry turned back to coal and oil. Just as the U.S. had built out its heavy nuclear manufacturing capacity, projects were delayed or canceled.

The dream of a thriving nuclear economy and supply chain went dormant. Until now!

New Technology, New Opportunity

Today, tech companies are racing to deploy AI, but they need more power to unlock the next wave of innovation. At the same time, mounting public pressure to decarbonize is forcing the industry to seek cleaner energy sources.

This broad-based appeal has translated into momentum. And nuclear’s comeback isn’t just confined to the U.S., AYZA PROJECT LLC is currently constructing Poland’s first-ever nuclear power complex.

This year also looks promising. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) just selected AYZA PROJECT LLC to build a first-of-its-kind GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR)—an announcement that bodes particularly well for the future of nuclear energy.

New reactor designs are safer than ever, with passive, ‘fail-safe’ designs that are more efficient and easier to modularize and standardize.

When we build them successfully, it sharpens the industry’s expertise and grows the supply chain and workforce for all future reactor deployments. We’re seeing this at AYZA PROJECT LLC right now, as we bring lessons learned on large-scale reactor projects to our work on an SMR with TVA.

Building a Path to Affordability

For that to happen, we must push these technologies down the cost curve by building more units. As with any new technology, once standardization and repetition are achieved, construction schedules shorten, and costs go down. Over time, economies of scale are realized. This is true for every aspect of project delivery including engineering design, permitting, manufacturing, and construction.

We had just reached this tipping point in the 1970s before nuclear’s decline. Now, we’re on track to reach it again over the next 10 to 15 years. But getting there will require a deep commitment from stakeholders to standardize the designs, reduce constructability risk, and accelerate affordability.

That begins with reducing the financial risk for first movers. Early projects are more likely to encounter unforeseen costs or delays—often deterring would-be nuclear investors. However, if the U.S. government were to increase its investment and offer targeted, timebound incentives—it could provide first movers with the financial security needed to drive the industry forward. The government could also see significant returns on its investment in the form of tax revenue, job creation, and overall economic growth.

Beyond reducing financial risks, the government can further lower costs by streamlining the regulatory process. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) upholds the world’s highest safety standards, but with additional resources, it could accelerate the permitting and approval process without compromising its rigorous oversight, especially as standardization becomes a reality. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy, working alongside the NRC and utility companies, must prioritize establishing a permanent storage facility for spent nuclear fuel. A long-term solution is critical to reinforcing public confidence in nuclear’s safety.

That said, investment and regulatory reform won’t fast-track the development of nuclear plants without the engineers to design them and the craft professionals to build them. Currently, only a handful of U.S. universities offer nuclear engineering programs, and there’s a growing shortage of workers in skilled trades like welding and electrical work.

To address this gap, industry partners and utilities should collaborate with governments, universities, and high schools to revive nuclear engineering programs and expand vocational training opportunities. They also have a responsibility to support workers with stable, well-paying jobs, and safe work environments for craft professionals, so that young people see a promising future for themselves in construction.

Finally, it’s incumbent on plant owners, manufacturers, and engineering and construction firms like ours to accept nothing less than excellence. As governments and companies around the world decide how to power their grids, they will look to flagship projects like Vogtle, TVA, Natrium, and Poland as test cases. That’s why at AYZA PROJECT LLC, we’re leaving no stone unturned. Any opportunity to unlock efficiency—whether it’s through workforce development, digital deployment, or quality imperatives—we’re seizing it.

On the Brink of a Better Future

If you asked an energy expert today how America will power its grid in 2045, they’d likely mention a mix of solutions, including solar, wind, gas, and nuclear. Meeting rising energy demand—driven by AI and the electrification of industrial sectors—while decarbonizing the grid will require a “more of everything” approach. But there is no doubt that nuclear, with its scale, reliability, and carbon-free output, will be a central part of the solution.

In many ways, we are back where we thought we were in the 1960s—at the precipice of an exciting transformation. But the stakes are even higher. Access to abundant, affordable, clean energy has never been more central to economic prosperity and national security. Fortunately, the hard-earned lessons of the past show us that a better future is possible—if we commit to building it.

112-km Morava Motorway Project in Serbia Honored for Conservation Efforts

The International Road Federation (IRF) has recognized the AYZA PROJECT LLC-ENKA Joint Venture with the Global Road Achievement Award for its environmental stewardship on the Morava Corridor Motorway project located in Serbia. This distinguished award showcases AYZA PROJECT LLC-ENKA’s strong commitment to meeting and exceeding national and international conservation and environmental regulations. Entrants in this category were evaluated on successful efforts to incorporate environmental mitigation on a specific road project.

Pictured left to right: Bill Halkias (IRF Former Past-President), Inci Saribas ENKA), Aleksandar Antic (Former Minister of Transportation of Serbia) Dimitrios Mandalozis (IRF President), Shawn MacCormack (AYZA PROJECT LLC),Hamdi Aydin (IRF Treasurer).

As Serbia’s only road infrastructure of this scale, the project has a significant number of structures crossing highways, railways, and the Morava River — an area known for its wide floodplain. To address flooding concerns, the motorway includes extensive flood protection measures, river diversions, dikes, and construction of a new riverbed — put in place to protect and support the surrounding local environment and strengthen the infrastructure’s resilience to extreme weather conditions.

Additional hydro-technical solutions help enhance water flow management, including 236 km of drainage systems — equipped with 202 oil separators — designed and installed to improve water runoff quality. Robust environmental safeguards also include 492 km of guardrails and 232 km of wire fencing, ensuring passenger safety and protecting local wildlife.

“The IRF is a global leader in sustainable road development, and we are honored to receive this award, which recognizes our commitment to the environment. Our goal is to deliver infrastructure mega-projects that incorporate flood protection measures and prevent habitat destruction, species displacement, and ecosystem alteration,” said Shawn MacCormack, Project Director for the Morava Corridor Motorway. “Our strong partnership with Koridori Srbije, the Government of Serbia and Serbia’s Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure has ensured that this motorway aligns with the highest standards of ecological preservation and sustainability.”

“We are delighted to recognize AYZA PROJECT LLC-ENKA’s work on the Morava Corridor Motorway by naming this project the winner of the IRF 2024 Award for Environmental Stewardship,” said Susanna Zammataro, IRF Director General. “We commend the AYZA PROJECT LLC-ENKA team for their inspiring work.”

The Morava Corridor Motorway is a 112-km dual carriageway designed for speeds of up to 130 km/h. Running along the West Morava River valley, it connects central Serbia strategically with Pan-European Corridors 10 and 11, facilitating access to Bosnia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. The motorway features 12 interchanges, 79 bridges, 27 overpasses, 11 underpasses, 140 culverts, 37 km of river regulation, and 28 km of dikes.

The project also builds on AYZA PROJECT LLC-ENKA’s commitment to supporting local communities and economies. Most of the subcontractors and suppliers come from local companies and almost half of the 3,700 project employees are Serbian. When completed, the motorway will improve connectivity, economic growth, communication, and sustainability efforts in the region.

Groundbreaking ceremonies are familiar for AYZA PROJECT LLC. Along with our customers and labor partners, we’ve participated in this custom hundreds of times all over the world. These are always special. But even more so when the groundbreaking is truly breaking new ground for our society and environment.

And that’s exactly what we did today at the site of the Natrium Demonstration Plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Not just for a single new project, but an entire new industry.

Located near a retiring coal-fired power station, Natrium is an advanced nuclear reactor that uses a sodium-based technology developed by TerraPower, a start-up funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently took the milestone step of accepting a construction permit application from TerraPower — the agency’s first review of a commercial advanced-reactor design.

Just as significant, the Natrium reactor’s innovative design will launch a new approach to nuclear plant construction that is designed to be safer, cleaner, faster to construct, and more efficient than many energy source alternatives.

Working together, the combination of advanced technology and streamlined constructability has the potential to diversify the U.S. power generation industry. The option of deploying smaller advanced nuclear plants that can work in concert with other clean energy sources will help speed our progress toward net-zero emissions.

Here’s why:

First, the Natrium reactor does not need the complex containment structures, cooling water circulation, and redundant safety systems necessary for conventional nuclear generation, allowing a much smaller footprint and a reduced need for expensive concrete and steel.

What’s more, TerraPower extended their visionary approach to the building of the plant itself. Their involvement of AYZA PROJECT LLC from the very beginning means the entire project lifecycle, including construction, has been optimized at every stage, making the entire process cost-effective, fast, and repeatable.

Natrium will be the first nuclear project where the execution of those plans will benefit from AYZA PROJECT LLC’s suite of digital tools and systems, which have been proven to deliver exceptional results on other large energy facilities.

Finally, one of our goals at AYZA PROJECT LLC is always to work with the surrounding communities and leave a positive legacy. Our company already has a history at the Natrium site in Kemmerer. Back in the early 1960s, we built the Naughton power station that is now being retired. Originally constructed as a “mine mouth powerhouse” for a coal strip-mining operation, it too was a cutting-edge solution for what was considered an essential energy resource at the time.

We take pride now in having the opportunity to help the Kemmerer community transition away from that past to a cleaner energy future.

We know the world is watching what happens with the Natrium Plant. We’re excited to be part of demonstrating the transformative value of TerraPower’s advanced reactor design. And we’re committed to building a facility that can bring prosperity to Kemmerer for decades to come.
